Dell Latitude E6410 i7 720QM Works!

Nope, no throttling. When I used Prime95 on all 8 threads it only hit 86C, and the cores stayed at 1.6GHz. When I ran Prime95 on 1 thread it would turbo to 2GHz.

 

I have a Dell e6510 with an i5 and am curious about this i7 quad core cpu swap. Does the i7 come stock with a heavier heat sync / cooling system than the i5? If so has anyone replaced the cpu and the heat sync / cooling system as well and was that easy to do or not? I've watched a youtube how to on the cpu swap at

I ran across this thread and am interested b/c I have a Dell Latitude e6510 with an i5 processor and have a couple of questions:
1. Did the i7 quad cpu come with the same exact heat sync and cooling as the i5 as shipped from dell? I'm asking b/c I'm wondering if running a i7 quad chip will overheat the i5 stock heat sync and cooling system?

2. has anyone done this i7 swap using their stock i5 heat sync and if so how long has it been running and any heat problems?

3. I'm wondering what good prices for the i7 chip are? I see some used i7-2720qm chips for $119 at parts-people.com

4. Would a i7-820qm work in a dell e6510?

5. In my dell e6510 I have an NVIDIA NVS 3100M graphics card/chip so I'm wondering if this graphics chip will work with the i7 ?

2. Asking in the wrong thread. I doubt the heat sink is different. Note though that there is different kinds of fan. There is one that is faster. (Experienced with M4500 and E6410).
3. It only supports first generation i series. So 2720qm will NOT work
4. i7 820QM will work in E6510
5. Yes. You have to have dedicated graphics to run Quad i7.

Technically the i7-920xm will work in the 6410/6510.

Dellienware, do you think with the newest bios from January 2013 that a i7 820 would work in a e6410?

I don't think anyone has tested a 920/940XM, they are 55W Extreme processors.

 

True, I haven't seen it, I would buy one if they weren't so expensive and try it, I can get a 820 for a very good price and that is still a 45watt, that's is why I was wondering

 

720QM is still 45 watt, so by nature the 820/840QM should work with no hitch. As long as you have the Nvidia graphics, it should work.
