Actually scratch what I said. The ALS was on when the backlight was controllable even without Dell DP installed and it does work though I would rather it not work. Disabling it means that I cannot control the backlight in any way. I have tried installing the ALS software before and it was a total disaster. I think I will just live with it for now until Dell comes out with an update.

So wait, you can control the brightness using the FN keys? How do you know ALS is on or off (repeating chunglau's questions here)?

What he saw was exactly what I experienced. With DCP installed, the on-screen indicator tells you if ALS is enabled. Without DCP installed, you can tell if ALS is on or not by covering the sensor and see if the brightness changes.

If I can control backlight with ALS disabled in Win7, I would go back to it right away. That's the only reason why I am still using Vista, since the brightness control works correctly in Vista.

How much disk space does Windows 7 x86 consume?

Control Panel, System, System Protection, Configure.

You can also right click on Computer on an Explorer window, and click properties, then System Protection.

Call me obtuse. Can he not control brightness at all with or without ALS? I thought he said that he can above? You have been saying that you can't change the brightness AT ALL using the FN keys (with or without ALS).

    14GB with Office 2007 on my E4200.

The funny thing is that the SSD is reporting 120GB in size and when you are done it has about 108GB left and installing all my apps brings it down to about 106GB.

Here it is, one more time with feeling :) .

In Windows 7, Build 7100 or previous betas:

    (1) If I enable ALS, I (or he) can control backlight with the FN key combos. It does not matter whether I have DCP installed or not. I can still figure out whether ALS is enabled or not even if DCP is not installed.

    (2) If I disable ALS, I can no longer control backlight. It does not matter whether I have DCP installed or not.

    (3) If I install the Dell ALS utility, then I lose control of backlight in any and all situations.

Another strange thing is that in my last attempt to install Win7 x86, RC, I could not control backlight at all. And the ALS FN key does not work (FN+left arrow, i.e.).

And you're the only one who could control backlight when ALS is disabled.

I must have been sleeping during all those reading comprehension classes in school

Sigh, all this time I thought you couldn't control the backlight with or without ALS, and as I mentioned (confessed!) above, I have no way of knowing if ALS is disabled or not. That means, we are all in the same boat since chances are that ALS is enabled for me, as well. I have no clue though since I am toggling (as I admitted. as well).

At least, I can still control the backlight, that's all I care about. ALS is annoying anyway.
