Stop unplugging it when the battery is removed.

    Is it overheating?

Run HWmonitor or similar and see where the temperatures get to. You might need to enable logging so that the data are saved for subsequent inspection.

At what point does it die?

Also, what are some details about the machine? Including but not limited to: Model, specs, OS, and age.

My precision m2300 has died after 18months of use. Overheated and I think blew the graphics as that was what first started to crash.

Trying a Samsung Q320 this time as the Dell outlet does not appear to be quite a good as it used to be when I got my precision.

It certainly looked strong and a long lifer but in the end it was I guess very average. :(

I still have my Sony Vaio fx series from circa 2000 and they are still working and in one piece, albeit painfully slow to use these days. They don't make 'em like they used to.

After 18 months? You don't have a 3yr warranty with that then? Most outlet laptops get the same warranty as a new one....might be worth checking that first

Yeah, the precisions have a 3 yr warranty by default.

    Maybe the warranty was voided??

    Hi guys,

Thanks for letting me know about the 3 year warrantly. My problem is I use the laptop for my financial hobby, share portfolio etc and will not want to send it away for personal security reasons. Maybe if I can get it working for a short time I can reformat. I guess removing the hard drive would invalidate my warrantly so I am probably stuck.

Removing the harddrive won't invalidate the warranty. On the contrary, Dell designed the Latitudes especially so components like harddrive and memory can be removed easily by the end user.

You can send the laptop back without the harddrive. They can plug in a harddrive and see what is wrong with it. That is assuming the problem isn't the harddrive.

I've done this before myself for the same reason: Sensitive company data.
