Dell Latitude D630 @ 1400x900 resolution

I have considered purchasing a Dell latitude D630. I've looked at online retailers such as liquidation.com, ascendtech.us, ebay, amazon...but so far can't find a D630 at the resolution of 1440x900, only at a lower resolution of 1280x800.

So, looks like the only option is to buy a screen sold individually, and upgrade the laptop manually to replace it.

The question is, is it safe to replace a lower-resolution screen with a better one on a laptop?

 

Hmm, i would say so if you understand the complexity involved with having to replace something like the screen. If you do decide to dive in, read the service manual very carefully. It's available on dell.com in the support section.

Have you looked in the Dell online outlet? They currently have a decent selection of D630's there. Once at the outlet, click on the "item details" number to bring up a popup containing the specs for that specific system. it'll tell you the screen resolution there. Look for "WXGA+" in the laptop screen section of the popup

I have the 1400x900 screen, and love it! I couldn't imagine getting one with the lower resolution now.

I take apart and fix desktops for people all the time, but laptops are completely different animals. Almost nothing is standardized, and each model takes a totally different approach to operating with something physically on the laptop, especially with taking it apart.

Yeah, LCD swaps are pretty easy - especially on Dells. In addition to that, screens really have been standardized a lot in recent years. 90% of the 15.4" laptops screens I replace, from various manufacturers - Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, and more - all take the same screen. It should not be a problem.

 

you mean our e6400 1400x900 resolution [which actually is for 17" lappy] is being dependent on the lcd screen brand [LG] and not the hardware/vid card on our motherboard....?????

 

The video hardware on most laptops has probably been able to output more than 1920 x 1200 for a long time now. Yes, you are more than likely limited by the maximum display resolution of your display. But on the other hand, would you really want 1920 x 1200 on a 14" screen? You'd need glasses the the thickness of a book...

 

OP: Have you looked at the Dell Outlet? I have seen a few WXGA+ D630s go through there. I had one, though it was purchased here on NBR.

 

Dell outlet may certainly be a possibility. At least that place is quite honest about all the possible technical details that I would want to know about

 

There was a link somewhere on the Dell forum here where part lists for a heap of Dell models could be accessed. I looked through the list for the D630 and if I remeber correctly, LCD cables for WXGA and WXGA+ screens were two different parts. The same is confirmed by a couple of eBay articles. If you`d like to swap the screen DIY style, then you'll most probably need a WXGA+ cable.

Having used a WXGA+ for 14 months, I wouldn't want anything less
