    I'm wondering if they got rid of the 35W down-rating in return for the bigger PSU. My 5470 is fast enough, but definitely just a little bit slower than my old work M5510 with the same i7-6820HQ.

    I'd love a 6-cell battery option in return for losing the 2.5" drive, but I don't see it happening. The dGPU version of the E5470 was a really different internal layout, and I can see that being plausible for this one as well.

    Regardless, I'm pretty psyched on finally getting 6-cores in a reasonably portable machine with a tolerably small PSU. Competition-wise it's kind of a pity Lenovo seems to be be ending the T4x0p series or at least skipping a generation, but I've always preferred Dell's ergonomics and I've got a lot of compatible power adapters going back to my D620.

    The manual/spec pdfs were posted by Dell last night. 35W cTDP. It's also quite obvious the boards for the IGP and dGPU are different, since the dGPU board also get a HDMI 2.0 output (likely from a DP-->HDMI converter chip), compared to the native Intel HDMI 1.4. So it's not just TB3 that the dGPU model gets. The dGPU being limited to M.2 also appears to be just a configurator limitation. Unless if the SATA port is missing altogether, there doesn't appear to be any dimensional obstruction from the board.

    In the service manual, I am happy to see they didn't just make everything accessible from the bottom (unlike my E5450), rather they also (seemingly) unified the top tray to the "main chassis," and use an internal "brace" to hold the rest in. Fewer plastic clips in a design, the better (IMO).


    EDIT: I didn't know that about the E5470 dGPU layout. Nice to know. I would also love to see a bigger battery option.

    wow, the E5470 had three motherboards. U series with IGP and 2DIMM. U series with dGPU and 1 DIMM. H series with dGPU and 2DIMM.

    So Dell has had some odd pairings, before. The only H variant Skylake I could find was an i3. The others were HQ and HK quad cores, but the E5470 manual specifically states dual cores.


    EDIT2: So you can probably tell by now that I read your post in three parts, and am posting my reply in three parts. Lenovo wants to make ultrabooks, so I doubt the p series will ever return. The T5xx line obviously will still have P5xS analogs, but the 14" laptops are what I am really interested in (mostly because decent 12/13 inch laptops that aren't MacBook Air clones are really hard to find).

    The p series was basically Lenovo's way to quieting the protests against using ULV chips in the regular T440 (iirc, it was the t440). Now that ULV chips have long since become the "normal" chips, and despite the U series quad cores being laughably constrained, Lenovo no longer feels the pressure to keep the p variants in the lineup.


    Either way, congratulations on your choice. I guess the random shutoff issues still plagued your E5470?

    The E5470 has been flawless for a couple of days since I replaced the battery. I've actually been using it in preference to the generation newer XPS because the ergonomics are so much better. It's getting a little long in the tooth, but I'm not in a big rush to replace it as long as the shutdowns don't come back.

    The XPS was always supposed to be mainly a media/gaming machine and for the (long) while this one was having the shutdown problems I wasn't comfortable letting my kids borrow the XPS.

    I'll need to look at the 5491 manual -- I tend to be rough on keyboards and up to now, the Latitudes I've had have all been pretty easy to replace the keyboards on. Your description makes me worry that this has gone to requiring a motherboard removal. Given the lack of other good options, I don't know that it's enough to keep me from getting one of these.

    I don't recall ever seeing a skylake dual-core i5-6xxxH -- the 6300HQ and 6440HQ are the only two I remember. There was also an H - IGP-only, 2DIMM -- that's what I've got. dGPU doesn't play very nicely with Linux, and it was really nice to get something able to run on 65W adapters at full power. 90W is still an improvement over the M55x0 and XPS 15, with 130W minimum even on the IGP-only models.

    Yeah, the T440p-T470p were always kind of unloved models, when they wanted to push people wanting a higher power machine to the W and later P series. Sadly, with the 5491/5591 now being their own models and not just a configuration of the mainstream one, I see this going that way -- I'm sure Dell would rather I buy a pricier XPS/Precision to get the bigger CPU that I need for work.

    I'm glad to hear it works with the new battery! Something I found in the 5491 manual: regular batteries sold by Dell have a rating of 300 charge cycles. The Long Life battery they sell is rated at 1000 charge cycles.

    I would spend the money on a Precision, but they are all so massive! Even the 5530 (XPS15-based) is at least an inch wider and slightly heavier than my already 4lbs, 6oz laptop (E5450).

    As for the KB, it appears to be the same as my E5450. Remove the trim from the top and unscrew it. Well, remove the battery first, because of the obvious and also because the ribbon cable is under the battery. Thankfully, not a nightmare like the current, riveted Apple MacBook Pro keyboards. I am also a bit rough on KB, a habit borne of the stiff KB in my old Thinkpad 310ED and the Vaio in my signature. That Vaio had a very unresponsive KB (most people online think the Vaio KB is breaks easily - I disagree, it simply becomes less responsive). However, if I commit to strong keystrokes (like an old Remington Typewriter), it suddenly becomes 100% responsive. It simply took a lot of force to get through the mush. So that bad habit has continued onto my E5450. I actually was a soft typer when I had an Alienware M11x (before the Vaio)!

    Pertaining to the configurations, I am somewhat annoyed that the PDF manual of the E5470 is not 100% accurate. Similarly, the E5450 Partner spec sheet listed a 62Whr battery that never became available (it also listed 35w cTDP quads that I never saw). Luckily, a later Latitude (5460? 5470?) 62Whr battery was compatible, save a different battery connector cable. I actually bought my E5450 configuration by googling the configuration I wanted, which presented me a link to the Dell configurator that exposed the dGPU option. That dGPU option was not in any of the ~12 configurations they had at that time. Similarly, the 5490 has 15 configurations on the Dell USA website, of which only 2 can be optioned with the MX130.


    I know you are looking for a decent performing Linux laptop of good quality, but with the advent of the U series quad cores, why not a regular 5490? The cooling system doesn't look all that different (though the manual can lie, as noted earlier; the E5450 manual does state the dGPU model and the IGP model get different HSF assemblies, a comment omitted on all later versions of the manual I have seen). Also, I too, used to run Linux on my laptop (especially older laptops, like my Vaio, were converted to Ubuntu LTS). Nowadays, most of what I need out of Linux is accessible via the Windows Subsystem for Linux (MSFT built in Linux support), and installing Ubuntu from the Microsoft Store (distros based on SUSE and RedHat are also available, though RH itself is not). It natively runs bash terminal (for Ubuntu) in Windows, not via a VM. Nowadays, we no longer need an Xbox account to download from the Microsoft store. Admittedly, all I use Ubuntu/bash for is git, ssh, and clang...

    I'm reasonably happy with the XPS 15, other than the power brick, the keyboard, and the clickpad. The dGPU doesn't play well with Linux, but it runs ignoring it as long as I don't care about battery life.

    I've never much looked at the docs for specs, as I've either had access to Premier for new machines, or been ordering from outlet (more usually) and stuck making the best of what they have in stock.

    Going by my wife's E7490, I don't see that it would be any step up from the E5470. It might actually be a little slower. It would certainly be an adequate replacement for this, but if I'm going to upgrade, it's for the substantially better performance of two more cores.

    I'm trying hard to get away from Windows for day to day use. Other than gaming, Linux on the right hardware should work just as well (although getting decent battery life out of it has been a challenge.)

    For work I tend to have a constellation of microservices each running in a docker container, and Windows docker (which uses Hyper-V VMs) is a very heavy, ugly solution compared to natively under Linux. I actually sometimes just run one Linux VM for all my services, with

    My actual development work is 90%+ Java and the JVM + IntelliJ will run on just about everything, but our whole deployment infrastructure assumes it's running on Linux/Docker.

    Just arrived today.

    Pics to come. Initial impressions, running Linux (work is 100% Linux or Mac, so didn't bother with a Windows license):
    1) The fan profile is very agressive at coming on under light , and slightly higher pitched than the 5470 I've been using day to day. I'm a little worried about annoying coworkers.
    2) It throttles quickly. ("CPU0: Core temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled") even under light load, and drops to about 3.3ghz on all 6 cores, but that's still a lot better than the E5470 speed-wise; if it were my own machine I'd be tempted to repaste.
    3) The SSD is a Toshiba XG5. Seems decent.
    4) I did not hit the panel lottery; it's BOE made, and neither as bright nor as contrasty nor as sharp as the LG panel in my E5470. It's tolerable, though, and the viewing angles are nice and wide.
    5) The chassis/ergonomics are almost identical to the E5470. None of the changes are very interesting:
    a) If it's any thinner, it's not noticeable.
    b) Docking port is gone (already was on the 5480, no?).
    c) It's still got 3X USB-A superspeed; the USB-C (no Thunderbolt on mine) is additional, in the far back right corner.
    d) No smart card slot.
    e) VGA moved around from the back to the right side, and the SD card slot swapped sides to the left.
    f) Other than the lack of a model designation (which was on the lower left corner of the keyboard shield) the keyboard and palm rest are exactly identical to the E5470. Still feels very nice compared to the shorter-travel Precision/XPS keyboards, and it still has a hard PgUp/PgDn.
    g) (edit) two other very minor differences, for completeness: the bottom edges are more rounded rather than angled, and the three small LEDs for power, external AC attachment and HDD activity have been replaced with a single longer LED.

    BIOS 1.2.5 is out. Doesn't seem to help with either throttling or fan volume.

    I've applied a 105mV undervolt (and 50mV to the analogio and GPU) and it seems to be stable; this helped a bit with temperatures but I was still seeing throttling.
    Using https://github.com/georgewhewell/undervolt -- I'd imagine XTU on Windows would produce similar results.

    That said, the above wasn't enough to limit throttling.

    I've started playing around with RAPL, and reducing the two turbo TDPs... the lower one ( constraint_0_power_limit_uw ) from 45W (45000000 uW as listed) to 42 and then 40W and the max turbo TDP from 60W to 55W and then 52W (constraint_1_power_limit_uw ; * 1,000,000 uW as listed) and it /seems/ to be throttling a whole lot less. If you want to play with these, just as root "find /sys -name constraint_0_power_limit_uw" and then cat to view or echo ... > to write to it.

    I'd be curious if anyone has Windows on one of these if it shows 35W or 45W under XTU, and what the short term wattage -- I expected to see 56W on a 45W system, not 60!

    XTU on the 5470 (with i7-6820HQ) on Windows can also increase the cTDP from 35 up to a maximum of the original processors's 45W limit. I can't figure out how to do that under Linux, but there's probably a way.
