ok, so i am a complete newbie when it comes to laptops and all this lingo baffels my brain. I am in the market for a second hand notebook and have come across 2 that interest me -

dell d530 duo core with 2.2ghz processor,2 gig ram ddr2,160 gig hdd

    dell 630 core2duo 2.0ghz T7300 , 160gig hdd, 1 gig ram.

The 630 is more expensive, but the 530 has better specs! What are the major difference between the two and which one would you suggest?

The primary differenct betwix the two notebooks is the screen.
The D630 has a 14.1" Widescreen, and the D530 has a 15" Standard XGA screen.
You can customize the specs of both notebooks at dell.com
The reason the D630 is more expensive than the 530 is because the specs aren't as good. The d530 has a Duo core processor at 2.2 GHz, the 630 has a Core2Duo processor at 2.0GHz. Even though the duo core has a higher GHz doesn't mean it's better. Core2Duo has more L2 cache and better architecture than the Duo core

The main differences are the screen. The D530 has a standard aspect ratio 15 inch while the 630 has the wide angle 14.1. The other difference is the modular bay on the d630. The d530 has a fixed optical drive and thats it. With the modular bay on the d630, you can do an optical drive, a 2nd hard drive, a 2nd battery.

While build quality is supposed to be the same since they are both latitude systems, I think the D630 feels more solid. Maybe since the screen isnt as tall the hinges last longer before they get loose?

Thanks for info. I think I will rather look into the D630. Thanks.

My MIL has a 530 and I have a 630. I have to say my system feels much more solidly built than hers.

Forgot to menation another difference which prob contributes to the more solid feel of the D630... The 530 skin is polycarbonate and the frame is that and aluminum. The D630s skin and structure is magnesium alloy.
