I should be getting my upgrade (Pro 64) within the next week and was wondering which method is better. I obviously know that it will run a bit faster for the first month or so with clean install, however, my concern is with the activation of the dell free upgrade version. Will it simply be boot the free upgrade disk and install and it will be activated fine? Or, is there more to it? Also, say a year from now I wanted reformat/reinstall win 7... How would I go about doing that with the dell free upgrade DVD?
    Thanks

I would assume that Dell Windows 7 installation media would work like any other Dell installation media. As long as you use it on a Dell laptop, you'll never need to enter a key or activate it. Furthermore, the installation media they give you should have the full version of 7 on it (just like 7 upgrade disks you buy at retail), so clean installs should be a non-issue.

My experience upgrading on a Dell (but not with a dell upgrade disc, I used an academic version) from Vista Business x86 to 7 Pro x64 was pretty smooth. I had to do a clean install, and the install and activation went without problems.

    Should be a non-issue.

    Hi guys

I was running Windows 7 RC and purchased an upgrade disc. I booted from the disk, wiped all the partitions, performed a clean install without entering the license key, downloaded all the Windows Updates, then entered the key and activated all without any problems.

To be clear, I do have a genuine copy of Vista, I just didn't want to remove Windows 7 RC, reinstall Vista, then migrate to Windows 7 RTM.

If you are legally entitled to an upgrade, then you're free to perform a clean install on your computer.

    Kind regards

I got my kit from Dell yesterday and unfortunately, the key they send with your Windows 7 upgrade kit is needed to activate it. This makes it different than the OS reinstallation discs, where no key was needed.

Do you know if it is possible to get Win7 64 bit version instead of the 32 bit version I'm entitled?

I've sent an email to Dell but yet to receive a replay.

Retail upgrades come with both versions, so I guess Dell will do the same, but this is just a guess. Try calling them or using their website's Live Chat system for a quick response.

dell's CD's only come with one version. you have to specifically request 32 or 64 bit.

The system informs me that I'm eligible to upgrade to: Win7 Professional 32 bit
there is no option for 64 bit.

I've been trying the live chat but no success, the rep told me to contact customer care and they only available by phone.

Has anyone managed to replace a 32 bit version with 64 bit?
    Thanks
