As you may know, most actual laptop lines employ Sandy Bridge CPUs, which don't have support for USB 3.0, therefore manufacturers like DELL have to rely on using third party made controllers in order to provide USB 3.0 functionality in their laptops/desktops. DELL uses Renesas/NEC solution with μPD720200 controller.

Thanks to a thread open by os10 and the schematic he provided, we could verify that Vostro 3450's daughterboard employs the older controller. This was predictable since Renesas mass fabrication of the improved 3rd generation version (μPD720201) didn't begin until Sept 2011 according to Renesas Electronics Introduces New, Third-Generation USB 3.0 Host Controllers with Industry-Leading Transfer Speed and Low Power Consumption | Business Wire

Apart from the claimed battery savings and other improvements this controller brings, DELL is facing problems being reported by laptop users with their older USB 3.0 connections.
On the 20th Feb 2012, DELL released a new USB 3.0 driver that actually installs a monitoring program that runs permanently in the background(?) And in severe cases DELL has been replacing the whole daughterboard to those users that claim having persistent USB 3.0 problems.

Thus, remains to be known if DELL has improved the daughterboards that has been lately sending to replace faulty USB 3.0s ... And if Vostro production lines after Renesas renewal launch date, at some point do actually incorpore improved daughterboards? and if so, since what serial number?
Otherwise surely many would like to know if there are plans form DELL or from third parties to offer improved USB 3.0 daughterboards at some point?

///To answer the question of what controllers is DELL actually selling and replacing failed ones, we could locate an owner of one of these DELL newest laptops or sent USB 3.0 replacement boards. One that is able to read what the controller legend actually reads; the improved μPD720201 or the old μPD720200, written on the USB chip.
This would be quite easy to be read by an user who has a replacement daughterboard in his hand. I understand DELL standard procedure is to send hardware replacements to the laptop owner address and later on a contracted technician visits him to do the actual installation job. Perhaps someone has taken actual pictures of the daughterboard he received?

    Atentively

    Hi Nspace,

This board seems to have the new USB 3 controller, (μPD720201). I am waiting on a response from the vendor to confirm.

Os10, did you manage to receive a more detailed picture of the daughterboard? Thanks

All Laptops using Renesas/Nec USB 3.0 solution that were manufactured before Sept 2011, have to use μPD720200.

Hi Nspace, since I fixed my problem I do not think that I am going to get the new usb 3 card, so far my usb 3 drive has worked fine. Had problems booting etc untill I got the latest bios.
