I tried searching for this issue before posting a new topic because I hate creating new threads unnecessarily, but I couldn't get the search feature to work.

I am looking at picking up an E6220 notebook, and found out that it does not have the optional backlit keyboard. Doesn't seem a deal-breaker though, because from what I understand the keyboard can be replaced? I have an old Inspiron 8200 that I have performed surgery on before (The little pointer-stick began drifting uncontrollably and I had to cut the ribbon cable leading to the MB after the software to disable it killed my trackpad too) so I'm not afraid to take the computer apart, but I am still curious as to how difficult this would be?

I have looked around at various sources for the backlit keyboard, and most seem to not come with the ribbon cable. Do I need to perform any soldering, or can I push off the old ribbon cable and attach it to the new one? Looks like a great computer otherwise!

Changing the keyboard should be easy to do, check the service manual http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/late6220/en/om/om_en.pdf

Check Palm rest 13 (Page 37), and keyboard 15 (Page 43). You just have to disconnect the ribbon from it's connector. Just make sure you purchase the keyboard with the ribbon cable attached already, should be a easy swap. Just DON'T break the motherboard connector!!, you will have to exchange the whole motherboard with Dell. I had a Dell engineer break one, they had to another trip for a replacement. Though I could done it myself..... but they have to do their job. (Not always correctly..)

Gothca, doesn't look much different than the Inspiron. Does anyone have any experience with the Chinese Ebay keyboards? Like this one for instance...

    Inspiron Keyboard Ebay

It says it includes the ribbon cable, and I guess that's what the white cable is? If I could order it direct from Dell that might be best, but if this'll work, might as well.

Ensure that you have two connectors on the motherboard, I forgot that the backlit keyboard require two ribbon cables. Just disassemble the keyboard and check if there is an extra missing connector, sometimes Dell like to remove this connector for cost saving. But I doubt it, just double check to save disappointment. The eBay seller seems fine, not sure what's wrong with a 'Chinese EBay' just treat them like any other seller? Ensure the description is okay, if not dispute.
