    The physical design of the E5440 is newer -- but a lot cheaper. The electronic design of the E6440 is the same generation, with much better construction.

    The E6440/E7440 were really the last of the old E6x20-E6x30 design language -- basically refreshes of E6430s and E6430u. They're still great machines; the E7440 remains (IMO) the nicest physical design of a Latitude since the D620/D630, and they are also wickedly easy to work inside or replace parts on, something I cannot say for any of the newer ones.
