    Have owned a E5440 for 10 months.

Positives are it's a well made and light business machine with huge battery life.

    Negatives:
    • Endless droning fan noise
    • Buggy, incomplete BIOS
    • Buggy Dell drivers
    • Buggy Intel 7260 wireless driver
    • Crashes connecting/disconnecting from dock
    • Insane number of Dell and Intel bloatware apps installed
    • No formal support route for any of the above
This machine was so perfect on paper and I want to like it but it's totally ruined by issues.

The previous E5430 before was significantly different and the new E5450 is completely different. Changing the design every 12 months in no way to create a quality, well engineered product!

I agree with the fan noise but have you tried clean install windows? I just did on one with touchscreen. Its not too bad... so far that is.

Yes I've heard a clean install of Windows 8 improves things, the BIOS does actually allow the OS some control over thermal profile where Windows 7 can't. I'm not in a position to upgrade now, in fact I'm just waiting for Windows 10 now.

Dell are releasing their big annual BIOS update in July and it's said this will improve fan control, which is a common complaint across all machines. The current algorithm simply doesn't work once a machine has been running for a couple of hours and heat has soaked through the entire chassis.

I can add a new complaint to the above list... Apply pressure to the battery and it breaks the connection, forcing a sudden shutdown/reboot. Dell Support have agreed to replace my chassis and battery I'm just too busy to get it done.

Thanks for the info. Will check on that pressure on battery affecting power.
