    hi all

i've recently purchased a 2nd hand dell D830 laptop. it was running windows vista and everything was working fine. but i need to have it running XP, so i formatted and installed XP PRO.

entered the service tag on support site, downloaded the "shipping" drivers. most of them install, some terminate with errors, others tell me that the hardware isn't found. no audio, also wrong display drivers, points me to intel drivers, but that doesn't install, nvidia one does the trick... just endless problems, but when i revert to VISTA, it all works again.

can anyone help me? i need this machine to run xp.

    thanx in advance

What system configuration has Dell on file for your D830? Enter your service tag on the system configuration page.

Dell's records are normally quite good. There are two ways for things to have got messed up:

    (a) The mainboard was officially replaced and then the technician entered the wrong service tag.

    (b) The mainboard was replaced with the board from another 8630.

Somewhere the chassis should also have an express service code which is mathematically related to the service tag. See here. See if you can find a label with that code and then work out the service tag.

ok, i've looked all over now, it appears the sticker that has the express service code and service tag are combined, that's the long one that has been removed! is there anything else i can do?

It looks like you've got to manually figure out the right drivers by trial-and-error. You have already discovered the appropriate graphics driver. Wireless is another configuration option. What else?
