Hey guys. I have been looking around for more battery power for those long trips and such. I came across this on the bay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Modular-Bay-Battery-for-Dell-Latitude-D420-D500_W0QQitemZ370118949968QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item370118949968&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A50

It mentions that it works for the D420 mediabay, but every time I look at the DVD, it seems shorter in height. The DVD can be swapped, so will the battery work? Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that the form factor of the media-bay battery is identical to that of all the other media-bay devices. It should physically fit in the D420 external media-bay. Nonetheless, I am NOT sure whether the external media-bay has a set of connectors for this media-bay battery - that is, I don't know if you can actually power the D420 through the external media-bay.
