I setup a beautiful new Dell E6500 for a client. However, it will not work AT ALL unless on AC. OK, it IS a refurb from their outlet, but still, battery should work, yes?

Is there a setting in the BIOS or something that is different in this line?

    Thanks for any assistance, Dave

Batteries on Outlet units should be close to new, especially with Certified Refurbished and Previously Ordered New machines. If it only works on AC, I'm betting there's a hardware problem; I'm not totally sure, but I don't think there's a BIOS option that lets it not run on battery. It could just be that the battery isn't charged, but that's doubtful. At any rate, you should probably call Dell and have them resolve the problem

If BOTH latches aren't securely engaged (until year hear a click from each) on the battery, it may not charge. I had the same problem once on my E6400.
