I used a friend's D830 once. It was solidly built. Haven't seen a E6500 yet, but from the reviews I've read it sounds even better than the D830.

They are both very solid but the E6500 has some new features not found on the D830. ESATA, camera option, DDR3 memory, LED LCD panels and the latest Core 2 processors to name a few. You can't go wrong with either but the E series systems are a nice upgrade from the D series systems.

The E6500 has DDR2 memory! (but no loss in performance, the cpu won't take andvantage of the DDR3s, so it is just more expensive)
The LED panels are great and the base unit is a bit smaller than the D830. Nevertheless you can get a D-Docking-Station for 20 bucks in the bay, the accessoire for the E-Serie is very expensive for now. The D-Series support a bay-battery (that replaces the DVD-Drive) which I miss in the E-Serie.

After all, if you don't care for the money the E-Serie is the way to go, it's better locking, has a better display (LED) and some new gimicks. If you just need something to work with, the D830 would be the better deal, the d830 performance will be almost equal to the E6500.

In terms of hardware and performance stability the D830 should be more stable, because the D-830 is a well built and approved system, the E6500 is new and therefore not all problems have been found or fixed (e.g. audio crackling).

I worked last week with a D830 and the system runs fast and stable (it had Windows XP). I had the M4400 which is similar to the E6500 (just better grafics) and there are some Bugs (downclocking, audio clacking...) in the E-Serie. So if you want a stable approved system and don't need the latest gimicks go for the D830. Anyway I prefer the M4400/E6500, but you asked for what you want.

My bad, I knew that. I was thinking about the E4300 I have that I am currently playing around with. BTW I have had real good luck with the E4300 and E6400 I have been using, no audio issues and very stable systems.

I was in the same situation a short time ago. I couldn't decide if I should buy D830 or E6500. In the end I bought E6400 instead because I got a better deal on it compared to the E6500 and the D830 got discontinued.

I am still a bit curious if the extra cost of the E6400 compared to the D830 was worth it. One thing that is very important for me is that the machine is cool and quiet. My current D610 is hot and noisy and sometimes clock down the CPU when it gets too hot.

Is the D830 a cool and quiet machine? With the cool running 45 nm CPUs of the T8xx series (T8100, T8300) it should theoretically run very cool. But does it? D830 with the older and slightly hotter T7xx CPUs got mixed reviews. Some say they were cool and quiet while others said they were hot and noisy.

My E6400 stays cool and quiet even under heavy load. I run a CPU stress test today (two processes running at 100% calculating n! for a big number) for about 15 minutes and the fan run at low speed all the time and the bottom on the laptop didn't get hot, just a little bit warm. That is very impressive!
