So for the past month or so, my D830 has been getting incredibly hot - something it has never done before. In fact, I used to 'brag' about how cool and quiet it was.

Now, about 20 - 30 minutes into computing, it's fans whirl at full speed and the entire bottom and right palm area get very, very, hot - even when the notebook is on a hard, flat surface.

    Intel T7500 @ 2.2Ghz
    4GB G.Skill RAM
    Hitachi 7k320 HDD
    Windows XP Pro
    9-Cell Primary Battery
    6-Cell Media Bay Battery

The fans don't seem to be plugged, or dirty. However, I have not taken they fan out... kind of intimidating.

    Any thoughts???

    Thanks in advance!

I would check out what the CPU is doing.

    1. What is the CPU utilisation in Task Manager? Maybe some broken application is unnecessarily loading it.

    2. What power profile are you using (maximum performance has the CPU running at full speed all the time).

You may find the monitoring page of RMClock useful for showing what the CPU is doing. It should spend most of its time running at minimum speed.

Give it a good blowout with compressed air. I felt the same way about my D830 as well; visually, it didn't look dusty, but the overheating issue kept on getting worse.

Your laptop is likely the same age as mine, so the same sort of problem would be expected to rear its ugly head.

    That's unhelpful.

Dell business notebooks usually have good cooling systems (I once had an Asus which had a very hot palm rest).
