I've got a Dell D830 - great machine by the way, but lately I put it in StandBy mode and for some reason it will start up by itself - I've come back or got it out of the bag and its just running like normal after being put in standby...

Anyone heard of this or can point me to a solution???

    Crazy...

I don't know what could be causing that, but I do know that computers can be woken from sleep with software.

You should not be putting the laptop away with it in standby though, since it isn't completely off anyhow. When packing it into a bag put it into hibernation or shut it down.

Go to Device Manager, right-click each device, Properties, Power Management tab (if present), uncheck the option to allow the device to wake the computer from sleep.

Check this for modem, network devices, bluetooth, mouse, keyboard, card slots... anything else you can think of.

BIOS may also have options about whether the computer can be woken from sleep... I can't remember though.

Anyway, there's no problem having it in a bag in sleep mode... I do it... yeah it's partly on, but only the RAM, so it's not a problem... that's kind of like having an iPod on in your pocket, no big deal... but if it wakes and runs awake for a prolonged period of time, then it could get too hot I think.
