I'm getting headaches from my 1680 x 1050 display, it's a matte finish and has a very narrow viewing angle. I run it at 1280 x 768 for best size and aspect, but it's then a bit fuzzy, too. Is it a reasonable change to go to a 1280 x 800 high-gloss display to get crisp text and wide viewing angle? These are for sale new at lcds4less, around $300. Thanks for any tips.

The 1280 x 800 screen will indeed be crisper at the native resolution, but the viewing angles will probably be similar. Whether or not the switch is worthwhile is really up to you. Have you tried increasing icon/font sizes on your 1680 x 1050 first?

Thanks, yes. Font and icon sizes are best when small, at 1280 x 768. The difficulty I have is that I can't be more than 30 degrees to left or right of the display, without losing significant brightness. It makes sharing the screen with other people very difficult, and if a high-gloss display will improve this, I'm inclined to pursue one.
