3 different Latitude D810's that we wanted to add some life to. So we purchased 3 SSD drives, two 64GB IDE/ATA Transcend MLC based units and 1 RiData 16GB SLC IDE/ATAunit. (Yes, the SLC is far faster with writing than the MLC drives).

Using our standard image, everything works fine. Except when removing the power cord from the back of the unit, it goes to a black screen, any hard drive (SSD drive) activity ceases. When doing the same thing with a traditional hard drive, the screens blip black for a brief moment, but the computer keeps running as expected.

Also, when booting from battery, when the light-blue background screen comes up (prior to Control-ALT-DEL showing up) with the cursor, then the screen goes black the same way as if the power cord was just removed from the unit.

I've tried different batteries from known good units and a new aftermarket battery, all produce the same results.

Why, oh why, can we not switch from power to battery w/o hanging the computer? We'd like to upgrade many other D810's with SSD's as the performance gains are great, but not until this issue gets solved.

    TIA,
    Mike

I've never tried any of these PATA solid states, but your situation is definitely curious. Have you tried the drives in other PATA machines? Do they function properly; is the problem only limited to the D810?

I tried the drives in another Windows box via USB cable, they ran fine.

I'm thinking there's some voltage switchover problem.

Well, I was thinking about using it as the main drive in another PATA laptop and running said machine on and off AC. I don't think using the drive as a USB attachment is going to turn up any problems; especially if the drives're working under the conditions that you have mentioned.
