I purchased my D630 back in June and have had 4-5 times where the touchpad just stops working all together.

Basically I cannot use the touchpad to move the mouse, and the buttons on it stop functioning as well. The fingerprint reader does not swipe either. The little pointer mouse works, but the right/left click for it do not work.

It occurs randomly, and I'm not sure why. Has anyone experienced this? Some of the keyboard keys lockup as well when this happens. After a restart, everything is back to normal.

It's fairly annoying, as it always happens at the worst time.

    I'm running Vista Ultimate.

I've had a D630 with Vista since January, and I have never experienced this problem.

But some things you could try:
    - Check touchpad settings (control panel) and set it to be more sensitive.
    - Reinstall Vista. (You should have received a disc with your system.)
    - Open up the computer and make sure the connection between the touchpad/keyboard and the motherboard is not loose. The service manual on Dell's support site should have instructions to help.

You could also try a warranty repair, but that may be tricky with a problem that comes and goes.

The touchpad settings are fine. It literally locks the entire touchpad up. It's connection is fine as well. I've never had a touchpad do this on any other machine, or in my office.

It already shows wear as well, like the coating is coming off. I may just call Dell and have them replace it. I've got complete care on it, as well as on site service. I've never had an issue with getting them to replace what I want. Just call up, say here's my problem, and they either send a new one, or a tech..but this is only on the business side.

Re-installation is not an option. I don't have enough time to deal with reinstalling Vista, then reconfigure it, and making sure everything works again. I had enough issues getting things to work correctly, and I really don't have the time to play that game again until I graduate, or have a day off.

If you have full care than I would just suggest having dell replace the whole palm rest for you (unless they just do the touchpad i am not sure). I have never seen the issue you are having with any of my company's machines but who knows could be a freak occurance, i doubt it is with vista. Only thing else i would suggest if you have not done it, is log onto dell's site and get the updated touchpad drivers and install them.

Also out of around 30 or so D620's and D630's we have one that is an abusive user making his touchpad wear down. So could be something your doing in that department

    Thanks.

I figure I'm a touchpad abuser, as my Inspiron 6000 had the same issue. My laptop goes to/from class with me, and is my primary machine. I never use a mouse with it either (as I sit in bed with it).

I believe it's a full palmrest replacement, as the touchpad is attached from what I remember. I'll definitely be giving them a call in the next few days. Just need a bit of free time.

I've never had an issue like this with any other Dell laptops (D and E series) at my office, so I'm assuming I may have just gotten a odd ball. I tend to get everything that is faulty - I'm bad luck.

I am sure you have dealt with dell before but just so you know when you speak to them, just tell them the problem is consistent, because if you say it happens every so often they are bums to fix stuff.

I deal with Dell a lot actually, since I'm an IT Director. I've actually had pretty good luck when I call in. Just called up the other day about a WiFi card not working, and told them to send me a new one. No questions asked, and it arrived the next day. I had my battery replaced due to some fluke with it. Told them I'm done running tests, this is the problem, and that is final.

..then again, my name may be on some "list", as I have dealt time and time again with Dell, and even managed to get a brand new laptop out of them after owning the previous one for almost 3 months, as they never built the first one correctly (no screws in the LCD, hard drive carrier, and elsewhere). I must be flagged..

Dell's sending a touchpad and a tech to fix it, I'm guessing on Monday (as I called after 5PM today). Hopefully this will solve this problem.
