I notice my D630 screen does not stay up when it's near close or open almost all the way. The screens stays up to various degrees near the middle. I use to be able to almost close the screen, maybe 2 cm above palm rest and it won't budge, now it will closes by itself.

I'm wondering if there's anything I can do or is it time to call Dell support, I do have 3 yrs NBD support. I take it they would replace the hinges?

    Thx.

Yeah sure they would replace them if your covered, but they'll most likely tighten them. Dont try it however as you'll lose your warranty

For the monitor it is just 4 screws on the outside of the laptop. Give them each a decent turn, if they are snug than it is the hinges and yes time to call dell. Otherwise if you have dell come for something like that its actually more of a pain for you than it would be worth.

I doubt tightening a screw will void your warranty. At least for me Dell has me take off keyboards and the works when i talk to them.

i have a d820 and there are 6 screws, 3 pairs, that can be tightened for the hinge. 4 screws are easily accessed, two are labelled 'D' and located on the bottom/outer/rear portion of the lap top. Two are on the outer back port area. And the final pair are located underneath the screen bumpers (the rubber bumpers) located on the outer/lower aspect of the front screen on the bezel. These rubber stoppers are removed easily, just use your fingers, and they should go right back to place with good stick after you tighten the screws.

This was on the d820, so I'm not entirely sure they are the same for your lap top.

It doesn't sound like an issue with the screws. I think the hinges need to be replaced.

FYI, the keyboard is considered a CRU, or customer replaceable unit. The LCD and LCD assembly are in the service manual online, but they are technically FRUs. Becuase Dell has the information available online to everyone, I doubt the warranty will be voided. But my question is...how will they know that you have "voided your warranty"?

Well, got in touch with Dell and they came and replaced the whole back cover which included the hinge. Wow, what a difference, nice and stiff now. Guess it's like that when it was new but I was so use to the loose hinge.
