    hi guy's

last week my lappy started to play up after my sisters brother used it . I believe he tried to put a modem on to connect to the net.

We got it back and it's been getting worse and worse since.I wondered if the reg or drivers were faulty/ corrupt etc

now the display has gone wrong. I had a company look at it and he just said "as it's on start up it's hardware, must be the onboard G.C faulty. not worth repairing"

Can anyone looking at the pictures give any advice?

    Cheers

    Richard

If you've got an Nvidia card, you probably do have a faulty GPU. There's a small chance some wiring is loose; you can try re-seating the display cable and seeing if that helps. If the GPU is indeed fried, you've got to replace the entire motherboard (that may be why the guy said it's not worthwhile). These boards run anywhere from $100 to $200 on eBay, so depending on how much you value this thing, it may or may not be worthwhile to fix.

But now that I think about it, the D630 should only be a year and a half old by now... isn't yours still under warranty?

many thanks for the assistance, i shall need to sit and digest what you havw written.

On your last point, I bought the laptop s/h from a shop here in the Uk and I put the tag number into Dell and their website said "no warranty"

    Should I question that??

That is curious you should have 3 years. My D620 has a screen that's getting pretty dim I'm going to request a new screen as this system still has a year on warranty left.

What do you mean by "question that"?

I don't actually know what's up with these sort of situations; I bought a D620 on eBay like a year ago and it also didn't have warranty (despite the fact that all these business machines should have a three-year standard). At any rate, if the Dell site says that you don't have warranty, you probably don't have it.

Although it could also have been our brother ;-)!! but no I actually meant my WIFE'S brother my B.I.L

    Sorry about that ...........

A small light, I have had online chat asistance from a nice lady in manillia who suggests they may still be able to 'do' something about the warranty ;-)

Got to go through some tests first then we'll see

    Cheers

    Richard
