    Hi guy's

It seems my D630 9 cell died the other day. The orange light flashes and when I pull the power out it dies. I tried the battery in another and the same thing happen :-(

I wonder are pattern batts any good as I see the prices vary from OEM

    Cheers

All the notebook batteries come out of a limited number of factories.

I would probably go shopping on ebay. i see some genuine batteries, but they are not new, so I would opt for one of the compatible batteries. I don't think Dell spends money on putting chips in the batteries so the computer can detect if they are genuine (and refuse to work if they are not).

Just collected one from a big ebay shop which just happened to be 8 minutes from where I was today in Reading. I paid 15 quid for a 56hr genuine battery. Currently on charge and 29% done

Thanks for the advice. I will get another as spare as we have 2 x D630's in the family and don't want to get caught again (he didn't want to sell me another at that price...but he will.... oh yes, it will be mine ;-)

Well done.:) Is it new or used? However, the real indicator is how much charge it holds and how much wear there is. one way to find out is to hold down the charge indicator button on the battery. The first indicator is how much charge there is (each LED represents 20%) but, if you continue to press the button then the lights should change or go out. On this display each LED represents 20% wear, so no LEDs is good.

It was new from a Dell re-seller. tried the LED -took a bit of finding mind you :-/

Old battery no leds whatsoever :-(

New battery -all light up green then all go out. -good to go ;-)

    Thanks

This won't always tell you about its ability to hold a charge, though; my 6 month old d630's battery just died unexpectedly (<1 hr charge, "end of usable life" warnings) but the LEDs don't light up to show wear.

i have been told that after the first full charge the battery should be left to discharge then repeat a couple of time for the battery to keep Strong.

I also heard that if it's used for a long time on the mains lead then the bat should be removed .

    Cheers

There are many different sets of advice about the best way to treat a Lithium Ion battery. My approach is to have the occasional full discharge but not do them too frequently (unlike the Nickel based batteries which need frequent deep discharges). And don't have too much faith in the battery's info. My 4 month only E6400's battery goes from 104.3% charge to 95.9% charge as soon as I pull out the mains plug.
