    Hi there

I am picking up a used D620 for cheap (small travel Laptop for me the XPS 1730 is too freaking big but I love it).

It comes configured with 1gb (two 512's). My question is I want to buy a 2gb stick and replace the ram in slot B only (bottom of the laptop) without having to disassemble the keyboard (although it does not look that difficult).

Anyway will this be ok ? Can I run with 2.5gb ? I think the D620 supports 2 speeds of RAM will they have to be same speed 4300/5300 or somthing like that?

It will recognize it as the full amount but it will run it at the slower of the 2 speeds.

You'll be fine. It is important that you get the correct type of ram i.e. DDR2 or DDR3 ect. RAM is usually backwards compatible so the actual speed you get does not always matter (though I recommend matching it when possible). You do not get a benefit from buying a speed faster than your machine can support, so avoid paying more for a faster speed.

Other than that, your upgrade should go off without a hitch, and I think you will find that things do run a bit better.

Thanks nizzy1115 and mgh_a1 - that is what I wanted to hear. I want to run it at 2.5 that should be enough of an improvment with XP.

Is there a utlility I can use to detemine what type of RAM is in there already ? What I am looking at is just a google search shows me either

    -533MHz DDR2-533 PC2-4200, 200p SODIMM, 1.8v
    -667MHz DDR2-667 PC2-5300, 200p SODIMM, 1.8v

    thx again

CPU-z. The memory page will show the current memory operating settings and the SPD page will show the full timing details for each module.
