When I plug in some external speakers it won't override the built in speaker. How can I get the external speakers to work.

I have a Latitude D610. Any ideas or tips?

How does it connect to the laptop? 3.5mm plug or USB? On some USB ones, you have to change the output source. Go to the Control Panel and open Sound.

    Thanks for replying.
I have connected the speakers into the headphone jack with the 3.5mm plug on the side of the laptop. These Dell speakers have both a 3.5mm and a USB. Does the USB work for sound or is it just power?
What do I change the setting to so I can test just using the USB?

The laptop is on a docking station as well. Not sure if that is affecting it.

Does the docking station have a headphone jack? Just guessing here, but if it has one then plugging it in there might help. Have you tried plugging headphones into the machine and is there a separate power cord for the speakers?

The docking station does not have an audio jack of any kind. There is a USB cord for the speakers. Not actual electrical outlet cord.
