Hi all you smart helpful people,

I am trying to help a friend who has a Dell D600 laptop running XP Professional with SP3, which has lost its MBR, ... and he cannot get into the recovery partition.

Normally with a Desktop PC it is possible to insert a Windows XP Disc, use the Repair Console and type “R” for repair then use the “fixmbr” and “fixboot” commands.
In this case at the repair command, it is blocked on his laptop by “insert administrator password” and although he has used his own Admin password this is refused. He has tried “Dell” and other BIOS passwords commonly used by manufacturers.... Using “F2” and editing SETUP he has established that Primary and Administrator passwords are definitely set to “Disabled”.

With a Desktop PC the other two common ways of removing the internally set password are to either remove the CMOS battery for a brief period, or to remove the 3 pin jumper and reverse it from left to right setting (or vice versa) for a while, and then put it back as it was.

Does the DELL D600 laptop have a CMOS battery and jumpers that can be used to make the machine forget it’s current password?
    Any suggestions welcome,

    Sequence 77.
