    Hi everyone!

I am looking at buying the Dell Latitude D430 then Dell started offering some big discounts so you can get a fully spec'd one for around 800 pounds (yes, I'm in the UK).

It was released 12 months ago (and has been refreshed with Dual-Core etc since first release) but it makes me wonder if it's about to be superseded with the Latitude 'D440'.

Does anyone know? I'm still happily using my Latitude X1 after 3 years (or so?) and can wait if anyone has some good gossip ... <<because 2Gb of RAM and only 120G HDD is pretty 2007 by now and only twice my trusty X1>>

    Thanks in advance!

The Latitude E4200 (12.1") and E4300 (13.3") are going to be out in roughly mid to late September from what I've heard.

Awesome. Thanks Greg. That explains their discounts. The E4200 would be the one ... I'll see what I can dig out about it ...

The E4200 is going to be a tad pricey. The only hard drive options will be SSD, which are expensive.

I'd say really consider getting a D430 or a E4300...the E4200 probably isn't going to be worth it.

The E4300 target weight is about that of the D430, so it isn't that big of a stretch to think you'd be okay with it weight wise.

Yeah. I just saw some specs on engadget. I actually could probably live with the 64Gb SSD in terms of space unless it is 'crazy price'. What are we talkign here for SSD vs HDD for battery munching???

But yeah, as you say the E4300 is probably only an inch bigger width and height and assuming the battery is ok I could get up to 8Gb RAM and 250Gb HDD it looks like. Impressive.

Or of course I could snap up a D430 for probably about half the price of the E4300 when Dell are giving them away in about 2-3 months :)

Yeah, my girlfriend actually has a recent D430 so I have checked it out personally. And if we're sharing an apartment we might as well start sharing external DVD drives and power supplies :)

Will definitely wait and see in 6 weeks or so what the RRP is on those E4200's and E4300's over here in ol' blightey.

Thanks so much for your help.

I would personally go for the D430 (and recently did, actually). My reasons: available now, good price (without SSD), and it's exactly what I needed.

The external optical drive doesn't bother me so much, and the added portability is extremely valuable to me. I just need to get my hands on the 9-cell battery (I went cheap), so I can have 6+ hours of use before a recharge is required.

Just my 2 cents... I've EXTREMELY happy with mine, and I'm now trying to get my company to replace my D630 with a D430 for added mobility. (Yes, that would mean I'd have two D430s - that's entirely OK with me.)

If you need a 12" laptop and do not require SSD drives, yes the D430 is the better choice over the E4200. If you like the 13" laptop range, than perhaps the E4300 which will have about the same weight as the D430. I recently learned of the existence of the D430 Media Base, which uses the docking connector to make a slightly thicker 12" that has an "integrated" optical drive. It adds about 1.5lbs, so it is a trade off of convenience of all-in-one v. weight.

Even once the E's come out, the D430 will continue to be offered for a little while longer. So if you can't make up your mind, wait until both are actually a choice and then choose based off price/features.

So long as the E's are just as durable as the D's, then you cannot go wrong either way.
