I have a 3 yr warranty on my Vostro 1400, but obviously won't use it for something like this, at least this early in its life cycle.

Does Dell care if I open up the laptop and shoot some compressed air at the CPU fan? It's probably just a year's worth of caked-on dust...

I don't want them telling me later on "there is evidence of tampering... we will not honor your warranty" or something silly like that.

Manufacturers are sketchy about opening up laptops and warranties. What you can do instead is use the compressed air to dislodge the caked dust, then apply a powerful vacuum directly to the fan vent. This will clean out significant amounts of dust.

as long as the laptop is in one piece, dell typically doesn't discern what it WONT honor as far as repairs.

Go ahead and open up the laptop to dust it out, dell won't care/know.

EDIT: Typically manufacturers will put a "warranty void if removed" sticker on items that shouldn't be touched, so if it doesnt have the stickers go ahead :)/

I have a vostro 1400 that i've disassembled several times with no problems, (and had warranty work done on them too)

I spent like 4 hours last night opening the laptop carefully, cleaning the fan, and closing it up again to perfection. All for nothing. The fan still makes noise.

Might need to replace the fan. It sounds like the ball bearings aren't working so well in the fan.

    Yea...

I guess I'll have to send it in to them. Such an annoyance... school is about to start again and I need this system.

I also hate having it be taken apart and put it together again so many times. Things tend to wear out that way.

Fans fail alot, at least in my experience. It's really really annoying.
