I'm hearing that only a couple will work on the M4400, and I want to know if this is true.

Do only x#### and qx#### work with this laptop? Or is it possible to outfit it with any of the q####s? I'm guessing only x and qxs, but I want to be sure.

Do any any of you know which of these is the cheapest compatible quad?
At what price do you see it dropping to in 1-2 years?

Seeing as the QX9300 is a standard option for the M4400, I don't see why the slower Q9000 and Q9100 won't work. Where did you read that the lesser two quads won't work? Obviously the cheapest quad would be the slowest one; I see a Q9000 for "only" $250 on eBay right now, though the cheapest Q9100 isn't that much more expensive.

somewhere about the different chipset combos, but that was an obscure place. Still, what do you think the prices will drop to by '11 or should I say '10? The $250 was still auctioning right?

The $250 was Buy It Now.

And yeah, it'll definitely drop by 2010; there's no question about that. I'm sure both of the slower quads cost somewhere in the realm of twice as much at launch. By the time 2010 rolls around, the next notebook platform will be out, and the current quads should be dirt cheap.

By 2010, you won't want a QX9300. You'll be wanting a new notebook with the newest platform, in that case, mobile Nehalem. If you want the power, I think it's worth it to get it now, so you get max use out of it until you replace your notebook.

For instance, now, you pay $400, use it for 4 or 5 years. In 2011, you will pay $250, but will only use it for 2 or 3 until you get a new notebook.
