I am not entirely sure about the tech aspect and if it really affect the performance.
But 6bit dither for 8bit had been the norm, and no one complained/cared.

One test to see colors missing is to photograph a painting. Then compare the screen image with original painting(note: in most of image editing, people do not have original object to compare color). I photographed my own painting in RAW mode and do not know what happened to many shades of reds that are very clearly visible in original painting. I have applied Color Management methods. I am still in the process of finding out what happened to all the reds.

Basically, paintings with many transparent layers of (neighboring) colors brings out more colors than shown in the x-rite charts. So industry should work more on color quality instead of pixel count.

You are right on the spot. Though it can be either(or both) gamut or color depth problem if missing color -> gamut, banding -> color depth.

I agree pushing more pixel is meh, but there nothing much we can do about it. The majority have no desire to know/care when they buy a product ~~.

Actually, there's a lot we can do about it. Have you told manufactures what you think? I write responses/reviews all the times. Sometimes in requested survey, sometimes on my own. When those surveys come across your screen don't just click them off. Let the manufacture know what you think, and how well they're doing.

In fact, they even send you a thank you a card/email, and/or offer a gift or % off coupon. Even so, I do it for the product improvement.
That's because adding pixels is easy (As we learned from the camera pixel count wars--which is still going on by the way.) and people simple assume that more is always better.
