I've been using a T400 for 6 months or so. As my company uses Dell, I'd been given a new E6400 (P9600, 4GB,250GB, 160M) to use. I've got vista business on the T400, re-built from scratch, working very well.

I'm thinking of cloning the drive, boot in standard VGA, remove all the lenovo software and drivers, then install the Dell ones. Would this work? Are there any downsides to that? It would really save me time and effort as I've got around 150GB of data on that drive...

The T400 is P9500 BTW with ATI GPU.

    Thanks,

    NC.

Bit off topic sorry, but could you give a quick comparison to the two units? Just how both compare in terms of looks, keyboard, performance, feel.

    Thanks

I see no reason to expect a Dell E6400 to function properly on an OS setup for a Lenovo T400. I would clean install the E6400 (or not) and copy your data over.

BTW, the T400 uses both an ATI GPU and an Intel GPU.

+1 there are going to be hardware differences that will cause some Device Manager errors. Even the GPU's could cause problems depending on what each system was ordered with. You're better off to do a clean install on the 6400.

I'd also love to hear your impressions of the differences between the two laptops. I wrestled with a decision to get an E6400 or a T400 last month and opted for the E6400 due to a better price, even with better hardware and longer warranty. And I liked the look/styling of the E6400 better than the T400.

The T400 dangles DDR3, turbo cache, and battery saving GPU switching (all of which you can live without), but the suggestion and prior experience that Dell business support beats Lenovo support was a bigger consideration for me. And I have not been disappointed.
