Just got a new Precision M3510 with i5-6440HQ and Win10. Have it in a Dell E-dock with a display port going through an active DP -> HDMI adapter (that supposedly does 4k @ 60hz over DP 1.2 to HDMI 2.0) to a new Samsung UN40KU6290 in HDMI port 1. Everyone else is getting 4k @ 60 on this TV as a monitor but I'm only getting 30hz. I'm using the Intel integrated graphics (the system also has a AMD W5130M 2GB DDR5).

I go into the intel HD graphics control panel, change it from 30hz to 60hz, the screen flashes a couple of times, but then after ~10 seconds it just comes back to 30hz. 1080p at 60hz works fine but looks like crap.

    Any ideas?

Mine did exactly this on the Precision 7510, with a 4K monitor connected to the ePort dock via DIsplayPort directly. It would work at 30 Hz, and if I set it to 60 Hz (which was presented as an option), it would work for a few seconds, then flicker out, and pop back up at 30 Hz again. I actually have two 4K monitors connected, and In order to get them both working at 60 Hz, I had to connect it one the system directly via the mini-DisplayPort and the second with a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter. I'm holding out for a TB16 dock to see how that works.

It seems to me like the connection via the ePort dock "should" work but for some reason it is not able to maintain the bandwidth necessary for 4K/60Hz in a stable manner. 4K/60 Hz wasn't a thing when these docks were designed, so it is possible that the physical connection is just not good enough, though maybe it would work if you tried a different cable or adapter.

While it looks like on the system itself you just have an HDMI 1.4 port (4K/30Hz max), remember that a DisplayPort connection can be sent over the USB-C port. For you, I would suggest getting a USB-C to HDMI 2.0 adapter and trying with that, so that you can drive the display off of the system directly.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately my M3510 didn't come with a USB-C port. D'oh!

    Didn't come with USB-C?

Dell Inspirons now come with USB-C... ? How does a Precision not?

USB-C is an option on the Precision 3510 (see the ports list here). Given the Thunderbolt-related hassles encountered by the early adopters of the Precisions with USB-C then I can understand Dell not putting it on more notebooks by default.

Just for someone else searching for this - I can confirm that I can achieve 4K @ 60Hz on a Precision 3510 using a USB-C to HDMI 2.0 adapter (specifically ICY BOX IB-AC534-C). The image is stable without any flickering and has full color sampling (i.e. 4:4:4 chroma).

The laptop's built-in HDMI 1.4 port only works at 30Hz, and the same goes for the "E-port Plus" dock using DisplayPort.
