Can't connect e6400 to wireless network

I'm an experienced user and know how to work with my D-Link 655 router. I have never come across the following:

"Device Ownership Password:"

What is this? I didn't have to use this when I connected my XPS 420 desktop to my wireless network or the Wii or my previous laptop or our iphones.

Any help is appreciated.

"The default password is found near the upc symbol on the router. That said i find it easier to reset the router before i reconfigure it. You can do this with a pen. on the back you will find a small hole. Put the pen in there and hold for thirty seconds and voila its reset to factory settings."

seems like a thing only with crummy d-link routers not your computer.

 

If I reset to factory settings, does that mean my WPA-2 pass phrase will be reset as well?

Would I reset the router, connect the laptop with the device password and then set the WPA password?

I don't quite understand the purpose of even having these hoops to jump through in order to just connect to wi-fi.

Also, what happens if you're in an airport lounge and want to connect to the wifi? There won't be a device password to enter.

I noticed that there are two boxes to uncheck so that wi-fi protected setup isn't used, but that didn't make a difference when trying to connect to my d-link.

According to D-Link, their routers don't have device ownership passwords.

 

After my 3rd call to D-Link, I finally found someone who had a clue and told me where to find the Device Ownership Password from the menus in the router.

My problem now is that the Intel 5100 in the Dell is only connecting at 54mbps. My Dell XPS420 with wireless card is connected at 300mbps. Is there a setting on the Dell that needs to be changed?
