I know this must have been asked a million times but google didn't help nor the search here.

I found out how to burn a Vista recovery disk, but that is a stripped down vista and not the complete install. I want to burn what's inside my recovery partition so that if my hard drive crashes I can just use the dvd to do a clean install of vista business.

can anybody clear this up for me?

Your system should come with Vista official disk, with the product key already typed into, and the Dell logo at the system properties panel. NOTHING ELSE. You also have a driver disk that is being provided to you.

You can uses these 2 disk to re-install the system to the original state.

If you want an IMAGE backup of your computer. Vista has this for you.
Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate edition has a feature called "Complete PC Backup". Which is found inside the backup/Restore Panel found in the Control Panel. By pressing on the button to make a backup of your FULL system, you will be asked which source you want the backup to be. Here are some choices: Networked Computer, DVD's, CD's, external HDD, and the best of them all: external HDD on eSATA. To restore your computer, all you have to do is boot from Vista installation disk, select Repair Windows, and click on the Complete PC restore option.

I think only the Vista 64 Ultimate option gives you a CD. Also the recovery partition doesn't seem to work. When booting in F8 mode, it says it cannot find the recovery files. This was done through step by step with a Dell technician. I had two m6400 that won't recover.

no. I have Vista business edition 64-bit. Some have the 32-bit and they have the disk as well.
Actually I just learned that if you choose "Windows XP with Vista upgrade". You have Vista disk as well, but NO XP.
So unless you picked XP only, you should have a Vista disk.
