    Hello,
A friend of mine bought an used Dell D620 with this problem: There are 8 level of brightnes for this model but when we start to change levels of brightnes from the lowest to the highest the brightness does not scale properly. It scales properly trought the first tree steps and it cannot go further ( you change it to 4 5 and etc the brightness is getting lower insted of getting higher). The result is that notebook is barely usable through the day (the screen is too dark) so my question is do you think that the inverter is faulty or is it the CCFL lamp ? (the lamp is still working - the screen is not complete dark)

Basically he has the "wrong" panel in there. It's not an issue with the inverter or backlight. Have seen this a couple times with non-Dell panels in Dell machines.

so the only way to fix this is to change the panel ?

btw, why should be the panel`s fault. The back light is controlled by the inverter and CCFL lamp. The panel has no part in this. Anyway tomorrow i`ll borrow one Dell XPS 1330 (its inverter is compatible with D620) and i`ll switch them to see if there is any difference. I`ll post here the results.

I don't know why it does or doesn't work. This is just what I have found in the small number of cases this has happened to me. Have definitely tried various inverters to no avail, but conceivably you might have a different issue from what I think, etc.
