Received a new E6500 to demo at work since we are not happy with our HPs and it has been the worst I have seen out of the box! The first time you go to the control panel after a boot it crashes Explorer. Then it crashed trying to install Windows updates the first time. It has Windows Vista Business x64.

Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be hardware related?

Try updating all of the drivers first.

Sounds like something is messed up. On my x86 E6400, it came out of the box perfectly fine. I would reinstall Vista x64 and then install all of the latest drivers on Dell.com

    I doubt it's hardware related.

Was that a Dell x64 Vista Business installation or was it installed by someone in the company?

Did you do a clean install of Windows or used the factory image?

It was Dell pre-loaded VB x64. Oddly enough I did not update any Dell components but did Windows updates and all seems well now. Hopefully it stays that way. Seems like a great laptop so far other than the initial annoyance...
