probably. contact Dell CS and order it. they'll probably ship it to you and you'll be able to install it yourself.

I just ordered an E6400 from Dell's outlet. It was supposed to come with a backlit display but it seems they're sending it without one. They say I can return it or they can send me a backlit display for installation.

Two questions: how hard is it to install? Would I need additional drivers/software for it to work?

I'd like to keep the model I've ordered if I can get the backlit screen; kind of a dealbreaker for me. Any suggestions appreciated. . .

I'm a little confused. Without a backlit display, you wouldn't see pretty much anything on the screen. Do you mean that you're getting a CCFL backlit instead of a LED backlit? Or are you talking about the backlit keyboard?

Ok. The keyboards should be really easy to swap. Here's the Dell service manual, which should give you an idea.

No extra software required, except it would probably be a good idea to have Dell ControlPoint (comes with all E6400s) installed to be able to control the backlight brightness too (not just on/off).

But don't send it back. If you can dislodge a few plastic tabs and can unscrew 2 screws, you should be fine.
