Love the computer except for a couple of things. Are the volume buttons on my E6400 supposed to light up? Also, my backspace key squeaks. Is there a fix for that besides getting a new keyboard?

The buttons aren't supposed to light up. Regardless of if you have a backlit keyboard or not.

As for the backspace key, depends. Try taking the keyboard out and seeing if there is something under the key, then blowing under the keys to dislodge anything that may be under there. If it persists, you could take the key cap off (I don't know if that's possible on the E6400, and how easy it is) and try to put it back on. Other than that, I guess you'd have to get a new keyboard.

I had a squeaky spacebar key. I ignored the noise and continued using, and the squeak went away after some time (like a day or two). lol.

The fix... is shaving cream. No I am dead serious!
On any plastic you want to hydrate or prevent squeak, don't use WD40 type of product as they will stain the plastic as they are deisgn for metal. What you want to use for plastic is shaving creme.

Apply some, and wipe it off with a dry cloth, and your done! Works everywhere, and no stain! And it's a real money saver!

I'm a little scared of taking off the key so I won't use the shaving cream until it goes "Tell Tale Heart" on me.

I'll use it for about a week and then weigh my options. It's the light-up keyboard by the way, a pretty snazzy invention, if you ask me.

Weird, on the E4200, the touch volume buttons light up. It freaked me out at first!

Yea but they don't. The buttons are painted gray, and there is no LED under the them.

GoodBytes, you are a gentleman and a computer scholar. Your selfless help has saved me some aggravation and possible Dell some money.

I put some shaving cream under the squeaky key area, pressed about 20 times, blew some compressed air underneath, and wiped with towel. It worked like a charm! Thanks a lot. A few more questions:

Do you use a twin or triple blade? What do you do about the razor nicks? Aftershave?

Ah completely off topic, but a break never hurts.
So you have hand razors with 2, 3, 4 and 5 blades (soon 20...). The number of blades does not give you a closer shave, but gives you less irritation. Also, it depends on your facial hair. For me I am comfortable with 3 blades... 2 blades doesn't do a realy good job at cutting, but for my brother he uses the 5 blades model. It is important to shave when your skin is relaxed (so after a shower where you cleaned with warm water your face, for example). This is what will give you the closest, easiest and less hurtful shave. Experts also suggest to follow the grain of your facial hair. It won't give you the closest shave EVAR!!!111 one one one, but it's gentile on your skin, prevent cuts, and keeps the grain in from growing hair in all directions.

Usually a razor last until it start cutting your face every time you use it. Don't chnage your blade because you cut yourslef once... it might just have been you that applies a little to much pressure or did not control your razor properly (ie: went too fast).

I generally don't use aftershave, unless I go out at a date or something. I just shave rinse and rinse with cold water. If I cut myself I use 70% rubbing alcohol and rinse my face. But that just me, I don't really enjoy perfumes.

How do I know all these things? Well... let's say I am generally not superb in school. :D
