The thread linked below has some discussion of colors and links to photos. I have a red E6500. The red on the metal covers is a dull subdued color, the red is almost a burgundy. Somone has posted photos of the red plastic cover of the E4200 and it is a brighter and glossier red.

It is magnesium alloy, not plastic. The back cover is a nice single screw design, you can find pictures in many reviews.

Dell needs to provide 360 degree pictures of their computers that are in color!

Sorry if I mislead anyone. I thought some of the E models were plastic and others were metal. Is it the E5___ that is plastic?

Anyway there were photos linked recently of a red E4200 and it looks totally different from my new E6500. I thought I had read that the E6's were metal and others weren't, and in my mind this explained why the photos didn't match my machine.

The photos of the E4200 showed a very shiny finish that looked like paint, and it was bright red. My E6500 is not shiny, looks more like anodizing than paint, and is not bright red but somewhere between red and burgundy. IMO my E6500 is more fitting for a business machine and is not flashy at all, even though personally I would have preferred a brighter red. I almost bought a Studio 15 instead, but bought the E6500 because I got the config. I wanted in the outlet at a comparable price to a new Studio 15.

yea its the E5x00 that are plastic. photo's are unreliable. digital cameras never seem to be able to reproduce colour 100% correct, maybe if you're using a professional camera it might?

on the E6x00's, the LCD back and base assembly+frame are mag alloy, the palmrest and bezel are plastic.

im not sure which parts of the E5x00 are plastic. look at dell's description for the E5x00 series

    Chassis
Durable Polycarbonate and aluminum LCD back and Base

    E6x00:
    Chassis
Magnesium Alloy LCD back and Base
    Color choices available
