I make it sound like a car, but would it be over 7lbs?

Well Im not exactly sure what would add weight, but I took the following:

    T9400
    LED LCD
    250GB HD
    Backlit Keyboard

It said something like starting weight 5.92lbs, that's pretty heavy...isn't it? Wouldn't exactly be portable, would it? I guess that's what the whole desktop replacement thing is about.

    Bad university laptop?

Whether or not 7 lbs is portable is up to personal preference. I used to have an m15x, which weighed in over 10 lbs, and over an inch and 3/4 thick. I still considered it plenty portable, and took it on numerous trips. It's all up to preference. The dimensions for the m4400 are great, and if it weighs around 7-8 lbs, then I'm gonna have a hard time deciding whether to get an m4400 or m6400.

I'm thinking this will be a GREAT university laptop...
