Picked up the new 6400 about 3 weeks ago and although everything seems to be running well, the fan is driving me absolutely nuts.

It will start and just run forever.

Sometimes, it starts up in sleep mode and just spins for hours.

    Is this normal?

No idea, but you can download something called i8kfangui to control the fan speeds in dell computers. You can force it to low, force it to high, or force it off.

    See my questions here.

The fan is normally very quiet unless something is generating a lot of heat.

Mine usually stays off (i can hear something, but i think its the hard drive) for a few minutes, then when the cpu hits a certain temperature i guess, revs up to a very noticeable level for about 1-2 seconds then calms down to a clearly audible, but not too loud level for anywhere between a few minutes and a few hours it seems, then turns off again. This cycle is repeated. Is this normal behavior? (using a03 bios right now).

btw, this is with no/low load on the cpu but in a somewhat warm, but far from hot environment.

EDIT: What is interesting is that if I run a cpu stress test such as prime95, the fan doesn't get any louder.

    That seems about normal ejcf.

It seems that Dell has gone a little overboard with the cooling due to the nVidia heat cycling problems.

Hi Speedy: Your fan is OK? JohnRatsey said, that there is problem..he has X4500 like you.. But if the fun with nVidia has theese cycles, I´m happy that I´ll have the one with X4500...I´m little afraid of the power of X4500, but now I can´t change it anyway..
And your subscribe : Ordered Sept 4/Shipped Sept 10/Arrived Sept 16 : Fast...
    Mine ordered 24.9. - EST - 31.10.

My fan has only gone to full speed a couple of times. During an Orthos stress test to check temps, installing Vista, and I believe that once the way I was sitting I was partially blocking the vent.

The fan is usually off completely and low speed is completely silent. I need to check if air is moving to tell that the fan is going.

By far, the hottest component in this notebook is the DVD drive. It gets hotter than the CPU or hard disk. The CPU is the coolest component followed closely by the HDD. It also seems that any heat that there is will transfer to the bottom of the laptop, but not the top palmrest. It has never been uncomfortable to use.

My ESD was the 22nd btw. If you don't game heavily or do a lot of CAD, the X4500 should suffice without problem.

I don´t play any games and don´t use CAD. Only HD movies and some video editing, photo editing (but only a light user). But I have to live with this notebook for 3 years.. It´s my upgrade interval.. But my latest laptop ( such horrible machine FSC Amilo Pi1556), is completely broken, so I have to upgrade now. I wish, that X4500 has sufficient power fo next two - three years...

It won't have a problem playing HD 1080p. Video editing doesn't rely on the video card heavily, the video card is only for rendering the previews. Same thing with photo editing. Those rely on the CPU and memory.

Yup.. It´s fine... I also think, that X4500 produces less heat and my lappy will be quiter, then the other with NVS160. And after my Amilo issue (defect GPU 2x, and fan always audible), I better be lucky with non-dedicated card.
I don´t understand, how I could believe my friend, that low-price laptop with Go7600 is quiet..
