I've spent the past hour or so searching the Dell site (and the search here is somewhat broken) so, is there any Vostro model laptop that supports 16GB of RAM? I keep seeing conflicting info about the 3750 (which I found on eBay for a great price) and it claims to have 6GB in it but the specs at Dell's site say the Vostro 3700 series laptops can't handle more than 4GB, but then I found another tidbit of info on Dell's site (not a specs listing) that says 6GB is standard on some models with 8GB supported (and there's an asterisk * for some kind of info but there's no info on the page).

It's pretty damned confusing, to say the least.

I am going to be getting a true quad core machine soon and it's either something from Dell or Lenovo, and it won't be the newest models (with Ivy Bridge class chipsets and processors) since those are going to be way outside my current price range, but the older Sandy Bridge hardware will work quite well indeed and be fairly cheaper in terms of overall cost.

If anyone can help, it's much appreciated, thanks.

    ps
USB 3.0 support (even just 1 single USB 3.0 port) is great too, as the Vostro 3750 has one but I can't get a confirmation of the actual supported RAM capability - guess I should just contact Dell, eh? :D

I can vouch that if it's a Sandy Bridge model, it WILL accept 16GB. The AMD APU models, I can't confirm but they should.

Dell will only say 8GB is supported, but 16GB works fine.

All Sandy Bridge should support 8 GB per DIMM. I believe HAL had a 3450 with 16 GB RAM in it? My Alienware M17x R2 with a 1st generation Clarksfield i7 supports 16 GB in 2 x 8 GB flavors with no issues (besides a slow POST). Major issues you are going to run into is the BIOS not letting you, I haven't seen that be an issue with many Sandy Bridge laptops yet.

I'm not sure if that is the model that is essentially identical to the Inspiron 1720? In any case, I wouldn't be surprised if there are other machines/models with this situation:

I have a 1720 with 6 GB of RAM. The specs say 4 GB is the max, but you can install 6 GB (4GB+2GB) and it works. (4GB modules were not available when the machine was first put on the market.) You cannot install 8 GB (2x4GB) because a BIOS bug causes it to hang at the end of the POST process.

That said, it's a far cry from the 16 GB that you are asking for. :p

Indeed, I did. Worked with no issues at all. My Latitude also has 16GB.

Both advertised as 8GB max.

Intel's data sheet for Sandy Bridge shows max 16GB. I *only* have 8 in mine

The Westmeres will take 8gb DIMMs as well; we've put 16gb in a Vostro 3300 (and quite a few Lenovo T410s) without any problem. Not officially a supported configuration on any of the above, but it works.

My company would have way too many T410s to retire, if it didn't.

(All of the above are i5-based; I doubt there's any difference with the i3s or Pentiums, but you never know.)
