This isn't a problem with the AC. The only common occurrence that'll cause the adapter to do as you mentioned is a short, and that is usually indicative of a problem on your motherboard. So yeah, I'd say it's a motherboard problem, and you're most likely gonna have to get that replaced.

Did this suddenly start happening? What happened leading up to this problem?

    ?

Yeah, it very well could be a short inside the laptop. Or it could be a burned out power adapter that is causing it to output enough power for an LED, but not be able to handle any load on it. I've seen it go both ways, about 30-70, the 70% being bad power bricks.

If you have another Dell laptop available, I would test the adapter on that, good way to confirm. If not, you can use any compatible power adapter (virtually any power adapter with the barrel jack style, not the 3 pin style, minus the XPS ones with the hexagonal shape will work).

this is not a standard Dell adapter its smaller( i unno ...) ... my AW actually has the standard dell adapter.... lol one time i plugged a non 12 amp:p AC adapter one for my friends 1525 and tripped the breaker because i tried to draw so much power :p

this adapter is smaller and i have no other laptops to test it on ..... i could measure the voltage right?

sooooo i need a way to test .... my mom is leaving in 3 days and i have till then to solve

btw she just told me it shut off ... thats why i think mobo ... but i wasn't there

What voltage and amperage is listed on the adapter...?

    My guess...
    19.5v 3.34A (65W)

If that's the case, and you used a 90 or 125W adapter, and you tripped a circuit... yeah, I'd say it's a short inside the computer.

Also a 12A adapter? What? That's 240W! I guess those are out there though...

lol thats for my AW laptop sorry it was a side story :p
i plugged a standard Dell plug into my AW laptop and it tripped the circut.
    its 20v--- 11 amps

thats not what happened to this laptop it was just going and then it died ....problem is she is saying it was unplugged for a while then it just died so she went and plugged in the adapter and it wouldn't start up.

so if sounds like mobo for sure :( o well another dead dell lol

Well, try a multimeter on the power adapter. Couldn't hurt.
Also try taking out the battery on the laptop, and holding the power button down for 30 seconds. Then plug in just the power adapter (no battery) and see if you boot.

    Correct.
Problem is it will only tell you if it's giving the right voltage without load.
No real good way to load test that unfortunately.
EDIT: When I said good, I mean no easy way. It can be done with the proper tools.
