I feel as if the area around and above the sd card reader is getting really hot every time I use my laptop for extended periods of use (30+ minutes). Is this normal? I just took the plastic insert out of the card reader and I can feel heat coming out.

Use HWmonitor to check your temps and post a screenshot

That's in the area of the contactless smartcard reader. I recall reading something which could cause that to heat up, but i can't remember the details.

I noticed that on my machine also and couldn't find any option to turn the smartcard reader off.

Let us know how it goes

that's normal....as long as you don't get burned or as hot as your hot coffee
mine and others in the same office heats up also.... regardless of activity

even though in a cold conferenceroom :)

You could try disabling it too. Go to control panel, system, device manager, and disable it under smartcard reader.

still gets slightly warm for me though

UPDATE: The heat seems to be coming from the built in wireless card. The Intel 5100 AGN. Is this normal?

I have a Vostro 1520, close to the same layout for the motherboard. I am 99% sure it is from the wireless card. I have the 1397 card. When I shut off the wireless it cools right down. As soon as I turn the wireless back on it gets toasty. I have no vents or air circulation in that area, unless that is what the sd slot is :)
