Has anyone installed a processor in their E6400 that is more powerful than the pre-installed top factory option (the 2.93GHz T9800 Dual)? I was thinking about putting one of the following into mine:

    X9100 (3.06GHz Dual)
    Q9000 (2.0GHz Quad)
    Q9100 (2.26GHz Quad)
    QX9300 (2.53GHz Quad)

Anyone know if any of these will work, and if you have done it, how is the heat management, and are their any other issues?

    T9800 - 35W

    X9100 - 45W
    Q9000 - 45W
    Q9100 - 45W
    QX9300 - 45W

The only thing that appears to be different is the thermal envelope.

The extra 10W of heat may challenge the cooling system (but undervolting, if it works, would help). Unless Dell have put quad core CPUs in the BIOS then they might not be detected.

It's worth trying if anyone has a quad core CPU to hand, but I wouldn't buy one in the hope that it works.

I was thinking the X9100 in the most realistic scenario. My concern was the cooling system, so I wanted to see if anyone had experience with that.

The BIOS probably doesn't support quads, as the closest thing to the E6400 that they sell with the X9100/QX9300 is the 15.4" Precision M4400.

I'd imagine this to be more likely in the !5.4" E6500, which is practically identical to the M4400.

I think you would start getting some over heating issues. Laptops are generally designed over a restricted range of cpus
