First question is: 32gb of PC12800 ram will work at 1866mhz ? or they will be downgraded to 1600 since the Dell configurator, for the 1866mhz, till today (2013 february), only propose 16gb for 1866mhz buying configuration.

The answer is: yes, they work !
Perfectly recognized also in the bios (see image below)

Till today the only chance to reach 32 gb of 1866mhz sodimm is Corsair, since you need 8Gb module. (see image below)

Alternative is Kingston with its HyperX but it only produces 4 Gb 1866 module (so, max is 16gb).

    The second question is:
is 1866mhz frequency really useful compared with 1600 or 1333 ?
The answer is that if the software does not able to use this advantage, higher ram frequency is unuseful.
But if the software is able to do, there is advantage that could have some impact, given equals the other settings.

I propose here a short test that of course is limited. I tried to test the ram in some sinthetic benchmark and also in some real case, since using benchmark is easy to see the advantage, but benchmark, as we know, is not the real case...
So keep this test as it is, it's just to get an idea. ;-)

(I did 3 attempts for each one test)

As you can see the larger advantage is with winrar, that (common knowledge) is very sensible to ram speed.
I have not considered any video compression test since you can find many of them in the web review and where there is a sort of advantage by have all the high end hardware.

Ah, here you can download a zip with the pdf of many screenshots about aida64, maxxmem, cpu-z,and others...

    1600vs1866 screenshots

    PS
To close, keep also in mind that the scenario results is really not bad, if you consider we are speaking about 32gb vs 8gb, and that 32gb at 1600mhz would have been lower performance than 8gb 1600...

    Ciao!

Confirmed! I check my BIOS and see that as well.

Well I'm in the process of having m6700 quoted up - actually I've probably driven our Dell rep mad with the spec changes. So now I'm asking him if he can get Dell to make this an option so that I can have it from them directly.

Otherwise, I'll just have to buy the smallest ram config and add it in :).

Aria seem to do it in the UK, and its substantially cheaper than the 32Gb 1600mhz from Dell!

Now Corsair has that same RAM but with low-voltage high performance. Corsair Vengeance Performance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1866MHz Laptop Memory (CMSX16GX3M2B1866C10). I wonder if it works with my Dell M6700? Thanks.
