    Just a note. There are some steps you can take to switch the disk controller mode and make Windows 10 happy. Easier than Windows 7 where you had to muck in the registry. These steps also work with Windows 8.

    * From the desktop, go to the Start menu, click "Power" to bring up the shut down / reboot etc. menu, then hold the "Shift" key and click on "Restart". This sets Windows up to show you the pre-boot menu during the next boot cycle.
    * While the system is restarting, go to the BIOS and switch the disk controller mode.
    * When you boot Windows again, you should get the pre-boot menu. Tell it to go to safe mode.
    * After you boot to safe mode successfully, check device manager and make sure everything looks good. (If you are switching from non-RAID to RAID, you may have to install the Intel RAID controller driver.)
    * Reboot to normal mode.

    While in safe mode, Windows will notice that you changed disk controllers and get itself set up accordingly.

    @Aaron44126 that's good advice.

    Along the same lines, you can avoid the hassle of getting into the BIOS/UEFI, or changing Windows Bootloader settings by bringing back the Advance Boot Options menu in Windows 8 or newer OS, so that pressing F8 brings it up before Windows loads, just like the easy way in Windows 7. This is a must-have tweak in my opinion. It makes accessing Safe Mode, Disabling Driver Signature Enforcement, Repair Mode, and other feature SO MUCH easier to access without having to go in and out of Windows. Those changes that were introduced with Windows 8 and not fixed with Windows 10 are so stupid.

    To remedy this, simply open an administrator command prompt and enter the syntax below. On the next reboot (and every time thereafter) you can simply press F8 to see the boot menu as shown in the images below.

    Code:
    bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy
    If you are not multi-booting more than one OS, you will never see the OS selection menu, and you will never see the other menu unless you press F8 before the Windows Bootloader takes over.

    Hi guys,

    it seems like we reached out a bit too far here ; ) Yesterday I received the SATA connector that is intended for the M3800 (Dell part no. DG95V), and with this cable everything works immediately without the need to change anything in BIOS, etc.

    What do we learn?
    1) These connectors indeed must have more differences than cable length.
    2) Using a "wrong" connector does not fry the mainboard, it just might not work.
    3) Even with the "wrong" connector things could work out (hence the drive showing up in pre-installed Windows 7), but when I got everything working fine with the proper connector, I didn't bother toying around with the Latitude connector, switching to ATA in BIOS, etc. Sorry ; )

    Again THANKS so much for your assistance : )
