im trying to install windows professional on my godamn laptop and desktop... the laptop crashes right on the text screen, while the desktop goes all the way up to copying install folders screen [after the format screen][still on the blue text screen], then it resets to boot up to install windows ... it resets... then it friggin loads te install screen again. The hard drive is first on the boot order, but the cdrom keeps loading itself. I tried to remove the cd after the files finished formatting and copying install files, but then it would just keep asking to insert bootable cdrom...

[laptop descrip below, desktop is amd 64 2800+, 512 mb ram, some random graphics card [it shouldnt matter], 40 gb hdd, sony cdrw]

i got windows home on the laptop right now so its not that big of a deal to upg, but the desktop im going to need to do work on... plz help on either~!

    --Inspiron 8600, 1.8 ghz, wsxga+, 60 gb 7200 rpm, 256+512mb pc2700, 128 mb radeon 9600--

Are you using the same CD on both systems? If so and your getting problems on both systems, then it's your CD causing the problem. If you bought this CD, get it exchanged or contact Microsoft to get a replacement CD.

    Guys,

I had to bring up this long dead thread.

I am trying to install XP Pro from an original CD onto my desktop. Set copies all the files after formatting the partition etc. I get the screen where it says "Press enter to restart. Set-up will continue after re-starting"- I do so and once it restarts it goes back into set-up from CD mode.

I tried taking the CD out when I restart it but then the OS on the hard-drive is not identified and it goes into a loop there trying to boot ....HELP ME PLEASE!

A 3 year long bump!

After you take out the XP Pro CD out and reboot, go to your BIOS, and set the boot device to be the hard-disk, and not the CD-ROM.

Well, I did that also like I mentioned but to no avail. It does not go into Windows setup from the hard disk. I just keep getting the "energy-star" page over and over again!!

As for the 3-year long bump, Windows woes are never-ending! Don't know whether to laugh :D or cry :(

I turned on the BIOS diagnostics and I can see that the hard drive is being detected..not a problem there!

I don't but it boots from the CD and goes into setup again anyways. I tried taking the CD out and forcing a boot from hard-drive...no luck :(

I am starting to believe it could be a motherboard issue but I don't know for sure. I got the system for $300 but new mobos cost $100! Yikes!

Good luck I hope someone can help you. But it looks like you have done everything possible so far. I did get it to install finally on my system with a bad powersupply it just took some determination. When the computer tell you it is going to reboot unplug it right away and have no power go to it. Then let it rest a minute and plug it back in and reboot without the CD in. This may trick it long enough for you to get it installed. Once installed I suggest using something like everest to test the system out and see what part is broke.

Ripley's believe it or not story!!!

I called microsoft and got connected to India...the kid seemed very knowledgeable and the problem was resolved after a short while...I had no isses with accents and stuff BTW.

All i had to was completely eliminate all partitions and start from scratch...just formatting the partition did not really eliminate all the data from the drive which had XP Media Center loaded on it...this was conflicting with the windows XP pro install for some reason.

I did as he told me and voila, I booted into windows set-up! just need to install windows XP pro drivers for audio and LAN now!! Yeeehaaa!!

    Thanks MS India!
