Hi zeeby and welcome to nbr

should work fine. ive got ultimate on my fujitsu standby laptop core 2 duo, 1.7 2gb ram 80gb HD and it runs fine.
you could always try it first and do a upgrade instead of a total reinstall.
upgrade will copy all your vista files and programs and save them in your programs folder named windows.old so you can revert back to them if theres a problem.

if youve had problems with vista then just go for the full version. i think the full version gives you the upgrade option as well (someone clarify this for me).
best wait for someone else to give advice as ive only used the upgrade and not the total reinstall.

The retail box also has the upgrade option as well so if you want to conserve all your applications/documents, you can with teh retail box.

However I would suggest a clean install simply to start anew; it's good to done every once in a while. It allows you to get rid of unused applications and basicalyl renders your system clean.

For the record Windows 7 should run fine so long as there's drivers for your hardware(and worst case scenario, Vista drivers work too). I've installed Windows 7 on a Pentium 4 and it worked fine so don't worry about performance :)

I am looking to do this as well.

If I buy the Upgrade software, will it only allow me to upgrade and nothing else? Or can I still do a full clean install with the upgrade disk?

The upgrade option is 1/2 the price, so I would prefer to get that.

You can clean install with an upgrade disk but the upgrade installer will check if there is already a valid genuine Windows installed on the disc. For example, if you have Windows XP on the disc, the Upgrade installer will only give you the "Clean install" option since an upgrade form XP to Windows 7 cannot be done.

The difference between both of the boxes is that a retail box can be installed on a clean HDD you just bought while an Upgrade disc would require you to install a prior version of Windows on it.

The upgrade disc will allow you to format and clean install as long as it detects a previous version of Windows on the drive. Or you can use the double-install trick...

do you need bitlocker and/or the ability to join managed AD Domains?

If not, then Win7 Pro might be a better choice.

    Here is one potential issue...

Windows did an automatic update. When it was completed it told me that my copy of windows was not genuine. However, it is genuine. Preinstalled from Lenovo and has been fine for 2 years.

If I try to upgrade, and it currently says it is not genuine, will I have problems upgrading?
I can access the computer "with limited functionality" and still open exporer.exe and run as an administrator.

    Any thoughts?

call microsoft and have them revalidate your installation for you.

    it's the only way.

Yeah you should contact Microsoft and see what's up. Have you done anything to the factory install from Lenovo recently? Any hardware repairs or changes? These can sometimes mess up the whole WGA.

No, I had not made any changes to my system at all.

I did have some issues with the HDD, so the only thing I have done was to remove it from the chassis, put it in an enclosure and run a chkdisk on it from another machine. I was able to get the disk working again both times it happened and it worked just fine.
It was only after a windows update that I had the problem.

I've had very lengthy conversations with Microsoft directly over the course of about 2 weeks. They remoted in, talked me through some things. They had me delete some files, run some commands, etc. It never worked. In the end the tech said it seems like I will just need to reinstall windows. I tried to squeeze a free copy of Win 7 out of him and he laughed. I did eventually say that if I got a copy of the media I could purchase a license from them directly. Not sure how much that will run vs just buying the update software.

Would my best bet be to just buy a system builders copy from Newegg? (not sure that can be bought locally).

I'm thinking to but the full version software from ebay or gumtree, but i'm not sure whether it's original or not.because they give low prices than the retail prices.

Try going to Genuine Microsoft Software and re-validating your copy of Windows. It will update some sort of detection libraries or whatever that may have become corrupted; this problem happened to me once on Windows 7 and doing that fixed it.
