Hi,
I am running windows vista basic for about 2 months with my new hp dv6000t.
I am in need of serious help with my laptop. Well first I know how stupid I am of not getting any antivirus software sooner. I was on torrent websites and all of a sudden one of them asks me to download and install activex so i am thinking this is normal. It installs it and then all of the sudden a whole bunch of pop ups appear and windows defender claims to have found trojan downloaders at a severe risk. It removes them and then tells me to restart the laptop. I do this and then a box appears stating windows explorer has stopped working and needs to restart. i restart but the box just keeps appearing and in the details the problem event name is "appcrash". It will not let me have any access to the desktop while this box is there. I am thinking there is some sort of virus now. I do have important information on that laptop but I cannot get into it since the box is there. Please someone help me out here. Maybe if I try to install some kind of antivirus software it can eliminate it or is there some way that i can get into DOS and find or extract my important files some way.
I would really appreciate the help.

Can you boot into safe mode then perhaps system restore is a possibility.

I did boot into safe mode and it has the same problem. Any other suggestions?

How important are the documents? =/
You could try booting a Windows environment from a disc and then running a virus scan on your HDD. The Windows environment should allow you to access your files as well. -

And people wonder why I whine about the blight that Microsoft released on the world when they "designed" ActiveX. The only ActiveX control you should ever install is for Microsoft's Windows Update. And that's it.
Unfortunately, this is a case of reaping what you sow... if you aren't careful when you hang around in seedy areas of the 'net, you get bitten. There's a reason there are so many zombie boxes out there. I don't know what you've got installed, and you probably have too much in there to realistically clean out. I'd get a USB flash drive, copy what you can over to it, and then repave the machine.
